BLJC uses daily stories to make award nominations easier

Brookfield LePage Johnson Controls (BLJC) is making its awards program nomination process easier for team members through using its daily news stories.

BLJC’s Beyond the Promise program recognizes team members’ contributions to the organization’s performance drivers, with awards on a quarterly and annual basis.

Staff members and leaders can nominate individuals or teams for an award. The nomination process has traditionally included writing about the particular example and explaining the BLJC values demonstrated.

A committee reviews the nominations on a quarterly basis and a number of award recipients are assigned, receiving a recognition certificate, letter and gift card.

This year, BLJC is aiming to increase the minimum number of quarterly nominations from 12 to 18, says Ron Shory, BLJC national director, human resources.

Shory says there has occasionally been feedback from staff members that the nomination process is cumbersome and there should be an easier way to nominate people.

At a senior management meeting it was discussed that the stories written by Axiom News for BLJC are a perfect breeding ground or source of nominees for the award, he says.

“We do so many of these stories, and they are excellent stories being written about our team members, many of which clearly demonstrate the values that we cherish most as an organization that we should not be ignoring this as a real potential source (for nominations),” says Shory.

BLJC decided it is a natural extension to use the online success stories as a nomination method, says Shory. In addition to the previous nomination process, BLJC will be reviewing the news stories each quarter and picking out those worthy of a nomination that meet the criteria.

BLJC will be publishing a quarterly print piece as part of its news program that will capture the award winners, highlighting the great things team members do within the organization.

“It’s all about communication, and part of recognition is being able to communicate to not only the individual being recognized but to their peer group and the rest of the organization,” says Shory.

“It’s an honour to be nominated but certainly an even greater honour to be awarded and I think if we can communicate that to the rest of the organization that hopefully will only serve to stimulate interest in putting people’s names forward.”

Shory says at every opportunity they encourage team members to contact the newsroom and share their stories.

BLJC, a leader in workplace management services, launched its daily news program in December 2009 to improve communication and recognize team members.
