The Passion of Person Centred Care Conference Beckons
Over the past couple of months I’ve had the pleasure of sharing enlightening conversations with some of the leading thinkers related to changing attitudes in how we care for our elders as they grow though the late stages of life’s journey.
Today, I board a plane to cross the frozen breadth of central Canada to meet many of them in person at the 25th annual continuing care conference, hosted by the CapitalCare Foundation in Edmonton.
This year’s theme, The Passion of Person Centred Care, caught my attention a few months back, for that is exactly what I write about on a daily basis, and I’ve had my sights set on the conference ever since.
Elder care providers from across western Canada and the far north will gather for two days to hear from experts in the field who know from experience what it means to change the culture of aging, many of whom I’ve spoken with for articles featured as part of our health and long-term care section.
Not only do I expect to expand my knowledge of what person-centred care really means in practice, but I hope to find out what drives the people in attendance in their quest for change.
At what stage are they in their journey, and what commitment to they hold to the concept that will ensure that moving forward we see actual progress towards a new acceptance of the reality of old age in our society?
These are the questions on my mind as I prepare to head to Pearson International in Toronto, buzzing a bit with excitement at the prospect of meeting a few leaders who can help expand the culture change conversation.

Kristian says he's been a storyteller all his life, and from an early age he thrived in the creative process of putting pen to paper. With Axiom News, he says he finds as much power in the conversations he has with sources for stories as he finds in the stories themselves.
"It's the questions we ask that catalyze great conversations, and more often than not I come away from the conversation somewhat improved. I like to think the person on the other end feels the same way. From that point on, the stories sort of write themselves."

“A community is a place or group where people experience a sense of belonging and respect each other’s differences. People have similar opportunities, care about each other and work together to find solutions.”
There’s nothing like entering a room to the sound of a massive round of applause and cheers, especially when you least expect it.
Here I sit reflecting on a night last week when I sat in a Belgian pub called St. Veronus drinking a dark Belgian Abbey Ale over a conversation with a Belgian couple about the immense possibilities to be discovered in a new approach to journalism.
Rochester’s Park Ave. is a quaint street lined with soft lights, funky shops and restaurants like Café Cibon, where I find myself on an evening in late February sitting across from Rose Marie Fagan, who many consider to be an icon in the changing culture of aging.
